John Jamieson is an open and welcoming, generic, all age Special School and National Teaching School which caters for pupils with a learning difficulty. The school currently accommodates 210 pupils ranging from 3–19 years.

Ofsted 2012 stated, "John Jamieson is an outstanding school with inclusion at the heart of its life. Securing equality of opportunity for students is pivotal to its work, permeating all its planning and decision-making. Every student has a personal plan for their learning and provision is very closely matched to individual needs. Consequently, students’ achievement is outstanding. Excellent care, alongside wide-ranging and rich experiences, ensures that students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding."
