Community Teaching Curriculum

In the Community settings, whether at home or in a suitable community venue, the curriculum usually follows that of the core subjects in the young person’s mainstream school. Liaison between MNTS and the mainstream school takes place prior to teaching and on-going communication between the settings aims to ensure that our community taught curriculum is as similar as possible to the work being covered in the young person’s school. We encourage schools to offer additional support with the broader curriculum, as appropriate to each individual student’s needs.

We teach from Reception to Key Stage 4, across the full ability range, including SEND and all lessons are delivered 1:1.

Primary Teaching

In Reception, MNTS deliver an individualised curriculum based on the Prime Areas of Learning, Specific Areas of Learning and their associated Early Learning Goals. As appropriate to need, this curriculum will extend into the early months of Year 1.

At Key Stage 1, we deliver the core primary curriculum, again individualised and with a focus on lively, engaging 1:1 lessons. We also prepare children for the Phonics Screening Check in Year 1, and the SATs in Year 2.

At Key Stage 2, we deliver the core primary curriculum, again individualised and with a focus on lively, engaging 1:1 lessons. We also prepare children for the Year 6 SATs.

Secondary Teaching

Year 7 to Year 11 students receive an offer of 3 x 90 minute lessons per week, one each in English, maths and science, planned and delivered by specialist secondary subject teachers in a 1:1 setting. We prepare young people for core subject GCSEs (or Entry Level qualifications) offered by the full range of examination boards, which supports transition back into school when they are well enough.

Complex Needs

For young people with complex needs, we offer a Total Communication approach: where appropriate we use Makaton, Intensive Interaction, Tacpac, Picture Exchange Symbols and support a full range of strategies requested by the on-roll school. The content and timetabling of this highly bespoke curriculum is created in response to the medical and educational need of each young person.
