Hospital & Home Teaching Service

The Purpose of the Service

Section 19 of the Education Act 1996 states that, “Each Local Education Authority (LEA) should make arrangements for the provision of suitable education at school or otherwise than at school for those children of compulsory school age who, by reason of illness, exclusion from school or otherwise, may not for any period receive suitable education unless such arrangements are made for them.”

The Hospital and Home Teaching Service (HHTS) was formed in April 2007 to provide education for children and young people who, because of their medical condition, are hospitalised or unable to attend mainstream school due to ill health. This service is provided by the Leeds East Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) John Jamieson School, on behalf of Education Leeds with whom there is a Service Level Agreement (SLA). In making this provision, the HHTS liaises with children and young people and with parents, schools, health professionals and staff in Education Leeds. Provision is consistent with that described in the DfES Guidance Paper, “Access to Education for Children and Young People with Medical Needs” (April 2002) and with the requirements described in the Education Leeds Medical Needs Policy.

Aims

To provide some continuity of education, to continue the momentum of their learning, with appropriate links to their own school and with any other agencies involved with the child or their family.

We aim to provide a high quality service for all young people with medical needs within the Leeds area. This includes children who are admitted to hospital or who for medical reasons, or reasons of great vulnerability, may be unable to return to their own school for a period of time.

Guiding Principles
